Arenal Volcano History

Arenal is the most recent of all the volcanoes in Costa Rica. It started its eruptions cycles more than 7000 years ago, but the region remained unexplored until 1937, when a recorded excursion went up to the summit.

Until then, the Cerro Arenal (Mountain Arenal) changed its name to "Arenal Volcano.

It was also called the "Birds Mountain" because of all the birds that live in the area.

In the video you can find the eruptive history of the volcano.

Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica can be better understood if we know its history. Not only the activity of the volcano itself but also the story about Arenal Lake and how the travel industry saved the day

Read it all here:

1968

On July 29, 1968, at 7:30 am, the Arenal Volcano fiercely erupted.

The eruptions lasted unabated for many days, inundating over 15 square kilometers of lava, ash, and rocks. When it was finally over, three small villages – Pueblo Nuevo, Tabacon, and San Luís were sunk in ash and pyroclastic clouds due to the continuous eruptions.

The volcano activity killed 87 people, and all crops and livestock were lost; properties were ruined, some, forever. At the length of its extreme activity, the volcano launched huge rocks – some showing several tons of weight – that produced many craters in the nearby agricultural fields, some of which are still visible near the National Park.

The Arenal Lake

Lake Arenal was established by the making of a huge hydroelectrical dam on the valley's eastern side. It was filled with water from several creeks, from 1972 through to 1976. By 1979 the dam was completed and began producing electricity from Costa Rica and Central America. During the construction, the contemporary towns of Tronadora and Arenal moved to the northeastern side of the lake, where they are now. The water coming from the lake is tubed to the dry North Pacific of the country, passing through three turbine-driven producing sites before being directed into an irrigation scheme of canals that have considerably improved the agricultural fertility of the relatively dry province of Guanacaste.

Tourism arrives!

For years the travel industry in Costa Rica was postponed because of the constant civil wars of Central America. Even though Costa Rica had no army, it is neutral, and it has a history of political, social, and economic stability. None wanted to come closer to the violence in the part of the World.

By 1988 the travel industry began with a moderate but regular pace in Costa Rica. The first one-day tours to the Arenal Volcano region started in 1989. The trip was lengthy and fatiguing, and the routes were beautiful. However, it was a long drive to be in front of the volcano and see its dramatic eruptions. Not even that, if it was overcast. The closer people came to the abundant hot springs in the area was touching them on the side of the road.
Only one small old hotel and a little restaurant were the only choices in the Arenal area.

Nevertheless, the region's farmers noticed a fabulous opportunity for growth and started creating restaurants, developing hotels, and all sorts of activities. The Arenal Volcano country blossomed and now is one of the most visited spots in all Costa Rica with amounts of options for travelers to chose from.

LA FORTUNA OR ARENAL?

are they the same?

La Fortuna is the closest town to the Arenal Volcano National Park and the name of the district where the volcano is located in the Province of Alajuela.

The main volcano in the area is called Arenal (A second important is its twin brother, the Chato Volcano) as well as the national park that surrounds it.
